There’s one aspect of business that tends to be the hardest one to stomach when you’re trying to grow your business. From every business owner I’ve talked to ranging from under $1M in revenue to well above $56B in valuation, this one thing remains the same.
At an event I attended a few weeks ago, I talked to the founder of The North Face – Hopp Klapp. He told me something incredibly fascinating – no matter where he was in the process of growing The North Face, “he never knew if he had something. He was never sure If he had a wild success on his hands.”
We’re talking about one of the biggest outdoor brands in the world! The lesson I’ve come to learn over the years is that when you sign up for this life (to build a business) it’s like the gym – it never gets easier… the weight just gets heavier.
Isn’t that the beauty of it though?
The bigger question to ask is, why doesn’t it ever get easier?
Learn to Rely on Your Team
The answer is simple once you step out of the trees and look at the forest you’re stuck in.
Business is ever growing, just like a forest. There’s life you didn’t even know existed until you come across it. The truth about managing it that you shouldn’t have to.
You need to have a team behind you that you trust to tend to their portion of the forest. Letting go of that control is tough at every level no matter what size business you run. As you grow, you’re eventually going to have to “let go of” some responsibilities. You have to delegate to someone on your team and it’s going to be uncomfortable.
Your mind is going to race with questions like ‘Will they get it done? Will they get it done as well as I do? Will they even know what to look for? What if they miss something?’
At the end of each day, most people strive to “be okay being okay”. Think about that for a moment, everyone works their asses off to just “be okay… being okay”. But it’s so freakin’ backwards. Living a life where “you’re okay”, creates a life where you’re actually “not okay”.
Just being okay creates a life where you are worried about things like how you’re going to make payroll, how you’re going to purchase that next piece of equipment, how you’re going to make your rent payment, or even how you’re going to put food on your table for your family.
What we need to strive for is “being okay not being okay” which actually makes you okay!
Taking Risks is the Only Way to Grow Your Business
Weird, I know.
What I mean by “being okay not being okay” is getting comfortable being uncomfortable.
Your wildest successes are outside your comfort zone.
When actions are outside of your comfort zone, it’s scary. It’s uncomfortable. It can feel as though it’s not okay. But remember, being uncomfortable is the only way to grow your business.
Here are some examples from my life:
- Booking business events for the next year without knowing where the business will be just to get into the right rooms.
- Going to a huge business event and talking to as many business owners as I can who are doing 3-10x in revenue than I am. Holding my own in the conversation and learning as much as I can from them
- Owning a business is lonely. Your non-business owner friends don’t understand your problems.
- Being so sold on what you offer that you liquidate your entire portfolio (that you were going to retire on) AND refinance your home in order to invest all of it into your business because you see the vision. ALL IN. Every single chip has been put into this.
- Having full faith that everything always works out, no matter how stressful or scary it can be.
Yes, living outside your comfort zone means burning the boats. Force yourself into success. There’s only one way forward and that’s up. If you aren’t scared, you aren’t doing anything big.
Comfort in Discomfort
What you come to realize is that you aren’t alone. Every business owner at any revenue level should be doing the same thing.
The $5M business owner is learning from the $10M business owner. The $10M business owner is learning from the $25M business owner. The $25M business owner is learning from the $125M business owner.
The moment you stop learning from those that are doing more than you or who have accomplished what you want to accomplish, you stop growing.
You start being comfortable being comfortable.
Welcome to mediocrity. Maybe you’re happy with that. I wouldn’t be. I’m always striving to reach my true potential.
The truth is, I never will. Because every time I get close, I realize I can do so much more.
The more I do, the more I realize I can do. So I push the target higher. Way higher. You must do the same, you are capable of so much and can help so many people through what your business offers.
